A driveway is described as paved or surfaced areas which provide ingress and egress to parking areas or garages.
Requirements
Size:
- Maximum of 30 feet wide from the curb to the property line and 40 feet wide beyond the property line.
- Duplexes with continuous driveways, exceeding 30 feet in width, must have an 8-inch high by 6-inch-wide curb separating the two driveways at the street edge.
- A driveway may be paved up to the property line, however, vehicles shall not be parked within 4 feet from the property line.
Maximum Impervious Surface Coverage: All building structures combined (driveways, patios, sidewalks, buildings, sheds, pools, etc.) cannot exceed a total of 40% of the size of the lot (50% is allowed for corner lots). This relates to pervious/impervious stormwater runoff capability.
Surfacing:
- All off-street parking areas must be surfaced and maintained with an asphaltic or Portland cement binder pavement or such other hard, dust-free surfaces approved by the Village Engineer (with the exception of existing unpaved driveways that were in existence on December 6, 2011, and have remained unpaved since that date).
- Pavement areas are limited to only drives leading to garages or parking areas, walkways, and parking spaces; all other areas must be landscaped. Maximum of 30 feet wide from the curb to the property wide and 40 feet in wide beyond the property line.
Curbs and Gutters:
- Alterations to an existing curb or gutter require a curb permit. Removal of concrete curbs for driveway access to private property must comply with the following:
- A saw joint at least 1 inch deep shall be cut in the gutter section for the full length of the proposed driveway opening.
- The header shall be removed in full depth of the curb section.
- A continuous gutter section for storm water shall be maintained.
- A ¾ inch expansion joint shall be placed along between the curb and the lot line.
Obstructions and Encroachments:
- No person shall encroach upon or in any way obstruct or encumber any public way to which adjoins to the owner or occupant’s premises.
