Cold Weather Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes

With frigid temperatures forecasted for the next several days, we’d like to remind you of the
following tips and suggestions to help prevent frozen pipes in your home:
Identify pipes located in potential problem areas including:
– Pipes located on exterior walls in unheated rooms.
– Pipes near broken, drafty, or open basement windows.
– Pipes in cabinets along an exterior wall.
Tips to prevent freezing pipes:
– Monitor home temperatures to ensure there is adequate heat to the susceptible areas listed above. Keep the thermostat set above 55 degrees F.
– Open cabinet doors to give plumbing access to warm air.
– Seal up gaps or cracks in foundation wall and cover drafty windows and doors.
– Insulate pipes located in cold, drafty places.
– Use fans, heat lamps, or small space heaters to increase temps when needed. Caution: Don’t leave space heaters unattended.
If your pipes freeze:
– Shut off the water to the home immediately.
– Keep faucets open.
– Use a hair dryer, space heater, or heat tape to thaw frozen pipes.
– Once pipes are thawed, slowly turn water back on and check for cracks or leaks.
